Mattie Lee Morgan-Sauter, a devoted wife, mother, trailblazing advocate, and beloved member of the Prague community, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, at the age of 92. She was born on June 9, 1933, in Cromwell, Oklahoma, to Bulin “B.E.” Burnett and Lena Louise (Drake) Burnett.

Mattie spent her early years in Okfuskee County and attended Excelsior Schools. During the Great Depression, her family relocated to California for a time before returning to Oklahoma. She graduated from Prague High School in 1959 and later from Seminole State College.

A woman of determination and purpose, Mattie served her community in many meaningful ways. She was elected Mayor of Prague in the early 1980s and worked tirelessly in legislative campaigning. A strong advocate for women’s rights, she was instrumental in efforts to bringing the Equal Rights Amendment to Oklahoma and served as the state’s primary point of contact for the initiative. She also organized the Prague Chapter of the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation.

Mattie was a successful Mary Kay Consultant, achieving Director status through her hard work, grace, and mentorship of others. She was a member of both the Methodist and Lutheran churches and lived a life grounded in faith, compassion, and service.

Family was always the center of Mattie’s heart. She married Charlie Morgan in May of 1949, and together they raised four children: Dottie, Charlie “Digger,” Danny, and Kenny. Later in life, Mattie married Frank Sauter on June 8, 2002. Mattie and Frank shared many wonderful years together, especially enjoying their time near the ocean in Port Aransas, Texas. Their love for beachside living brought them great joy.

Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband and father of her children, Charlie Morgan; her husband, Frank Sauter; sons, Charlie “Digger” Morgan and Kenneth Wayne Morgan; daughter-in-law, Debbie Morgan; and her brother, Grover Edward Burnett.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Dottie Watson and her husband, David; her son, Danny Morgan and his wife, Treasure; grandchildren, Vanessa Mitchell and her husband Joe, Zac Morgan and his wife Maegan, Danielle Morgan, Sheila Morgan, mother of Robert Morgan and his wife Mellissa, and Dylan Morgan and his wife, Chelsea; great-grandchildren, Riley Fesler, Caleb Fesler, Austin Fesler, Easton Fesler, Tucker Mitchell, Layla Morgan, Ethan Morgan, Myles Morgan, Charlie Mae Morgan, and Maverick Morgan; along with many other loving family members and friends.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the caring staffs of Primrose Retirement Community of Shawnee, Shawnee Memory Care Center, and Cohesive Hospice for their compassion, love, and excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mattie’s honor to the Morgan Family Scholarship at Seminole State College (SSC, P.O. Box 351, Seminole, OK 74868) or the Debbie Morgan Scholarship via BancFirst of Prague, OK.
