Frances Louise Hixon

Frances Teters was born southwest of Stroud on March 18, 1939, to LeRoy and Merle (Brown) Teters. She attended Oak Grove Schools and later transferred to Stroud Schools. In 1956 Frances became one of the first patients to receive a Corneal Transplant from the Dean McGee Eye Institute. This type of surgery was groundbreaking for its day, and she always said she was fortunate to have gotten this kind of help. Throughout her life she had two more transplant surgeries. Frances graduated from Stroud High School in 1958 and went on to Capitol Hill Business College. After one semester there she decided to come home.

In May of 1959 her uncle and cousin introduced her to Charles S. Hixon. Their first date was at Springlake Amusement Park. They were married on July 15, 1959, and moved to Kendrick for a short time. In early 1960, they moved to a property three miles south of Stroud and lived there their entire married life. To this union two children were born, a baby girl in 1968 and a daughter, Martha, in July of 1969.

Frances was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Stroud. A member of the Adult Four Sunday School class, Frances loved her church and class members. During her attending there she taught children’s Sunday School for several years. Frances worked for Stroud Public schools at the Middle School for over twelve years and many students remember her letting them in to retrieve forgotten books or other items from their lockers.

Frances loved puzzles and games, especially playing “Moon” with her family and friends. She also liked to research her genealogy. She and Charles took many trips to Missouri or Arkansas to “look up” the records she needed. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Stroud Senior Citizens, at one time helping them with the “Meals on Wheels” deliveries.

Charles preceded her in death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by a baby daughter, her parents, brother Robert (Bobby), and sisters Florence Evans and Betty Powers.

Frances is survived by her daughter Martha of Midwest City, Brothers Lloyd Teters of Stroud, Roy Teters and wife Wilma of Sparks, Sister Darla Horton and husband Bill of Anahuac, Texas and brother-in-law Delmer Summers of Kendrick. Many nieces and nephews, and a multitude of other family and friends. She is also missed by her loyal canine companion Jasper Leon

The family would like to thank Debbie Garrett, Vicki Keim, Bronwyn Howard, and Peggy Garner for the care and love that they gave Frances over the years. Special thanks to the staff of Stroud Nursing and Rehab and Traditions Hospice.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Oklahomans for Special Library Services or the Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children in her name.

A visitation will be held Thursday, July 24 from 10am to 8pm with family here from 6-8pm, and also Friday, July 25 from 10am to 8pm. A funeral service will be Saturday, July 26, at 10:00 AM at Stroud First Baptist Church with burial to follow at Stroud Cemetery.
