Delbert Lee Sumpter

November 19, 1937 — February 20, 2025

Chandler

Delbert Lee Sumpter, a beloved husband, daddy, grandpa, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on November 19, 1937, in Mehan, Oklahoma, Delbert was a beacon of strength and kindness throughout his life, leaving behind a legacy of love and service that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Delbert was the son of Jim Sumpter and Pearl Thurman Sumpter. He grew up in a close-knit family and was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Bill, Gerald, Leon, TJ and sisters, Betty and Sally.

His educational journey took him through several small rural schools around Payne County, culminating in his high school years in Stillwater.

On August 31, 1956, he married the love of his life, Lou Ann Anglley, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Together they made a home in Stillwater where he worked for OSU before moving to Hennessy, then Davenport, and finally Chandler Ok.

Delbert's professional journey began in the dairy farming industry - a vocation that he dedicated many years to. In 1976, he transitioned to Davenport to work for Thurman Norman on his dairy farm. His career took a turn when he began working in the oil field, ultimately becoming the manager of Arrow Pump and Supply in Stroud, a position he held with pride until January 9, 2025, marking nearly 40 years of committed service.

Beyond his professional life, Delbert was known for his steadfast support of youth organizations. He actively engaged with FFA, 4H, and the Special Olympics, along with the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma. He believed in giving back to the community and supporting its younger members, embodying the spirit of generosity and compassion.

Delbert had a variety of interests that punctuated his life. In his younger years, he enjoyed yard work, pheasant hunting, and frog gigging. He cherished spending time with his roustabout buddies and was a familiar figure at Davenport football games, proudly standing the fence line to support his community. In his later years, Delbert found joy in simpler pleasures, spending his days off doing word finds, watching Wheel of Fortune and RFD TV, all while relishing the warmth of family

Delbert is survived by his wife, Lou Ann of the home, daughters Cindy Lee and her husband Randy of Chandler, Kay Chambers and her husband Jerry of Blackwell, and son Rodney Sumpter of Chandler. Delbert's family was his pride and joy, and he was especially proud of his grandchildren: Tionna Brauer of Chandler, Cody Lee of California, Tom Betts of California, Jesse Chambers and Wyatt Chambers of Blackwell, and Jaden Sumpter of Chandler. He also adored his great-grandchildren, Travis Brauer and his wife Jade, of Chandler, Baker Sharp of Ponca City, Oklahoma and Sophia Chambers of Blackwell, Oklahoma.

A funeral service to honor Delbert's life will be held on February 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the 1st Assembly of God Church in Chandler, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the organizations Delbert so passionately supported, ensuring that his legacy of love and generosity continues. The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Avem Rural Wellness Stroud Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion they showed Delbert during his final days. Their dedication made a profound difference during this difficult time.
