Jimmie Lee Abercrombie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, coach, and lifelong Oklahoma Sooner fan, passed away on October 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, laughter, and a life dedicated to the young people he taught and coached.
Jimmie was born on December 22, 1948, in Stroud, Oklahoma, to Herman and Delores Abercrombie. He was the youngest of three boys, following his older brothers, Ronnie and Donald.
A gifted athlete from an early age, Jimmie was an All-State football player at Stroud High School, graduating in 1967 and he was also Class President. His talent on the football field earned him a football scholarship to Southwestern Oklahoma State University. After college, Jimmie enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard, where he proudly served for more than 20 years.
In 1967, Jimmie married the former Patricia Dunlap. Together they welcomed two children, William “Kelley” and Jacqueline “Jacquie” Racheal. They later divorced in 1979.
Jimmie’s greatest passion was teaching and coaching. He began his career in Oklahoma, spending 11 years teaching and coaching in Mannford and Pawnee. In 1980, he made the big move south of the Red River to Matagorda, Texas, where he continued his career in education and football. He eventually settled in Wharton, Texas, where he would spend the next 29 years teaching, coaching, and making a lasting impact on countless students and athletes.
In 2008, Jimmie married the love of his life, Linda Lou. Through Linda, he gained two stepchildren, Wayne and Jenny, and his family grew even larger. Jimmie and Linda made their home at Sooner Acres in Wharton, Texas, where they shared the rest of their lives together.
Jimmie was a lifelong and devoted Oklahoma Sooners fan. His love for OU was unmistakable, and he proudly flew his OU flag at Sooner Acres. For Jimmie, being a Sooner was more than being a fan—it was simply part of who he was.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Delores Abercrombie, and his beloved wife, Linda Lou.
He is survived by his son, Kelley, and his wife, JennyBelle; his daughter, Jacquie, and her husband, Brad Davis; and his stepson, Wayne, and his wife, Michelle.
He leaves behind a cherished legacy through his grandchildren: Cooper and his wife, Shelby; Caleb; Harrison; Reid and his wife, Arika; Bethany and her husband, Jarrett; Mitchell and his wife, Alaina; Grace, soon to be married to Jon; and Jackson.
His greatest joy also continued through his great-grandchildren: Palmer, Duke, Baker, Jace, Sawyer, and Victoria.
Jimmie will be remembered for his passion for football, his dedication to teaching and coaching, his unwavering love for the Oklahoma Sooners, and most of all, the love he gave to his family. His influence reached far beyond the classroom and football field, touching the lives of generations of students, athletes, friends, and family.
His legacy will live on in the lessons he taught, the lives he influenced, and the family he loved so dearly.
Rest easy, Coach.
Boomer Sooner!
